The two-time NBA champion and the “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” star, Lamar Odom has credited medical marijuana for helping him recover from severe cocaine addiction that cost him his life once. In 2015, the former LA Lakers star was put on life support after he had overdosed on cocaine in Nevada. Though he recovered from the bad trip, he still had to fight off the addiction. It was during rehab that he discovered that certain strains of marijuana had healing properties, which as he asserts, helped him wean off coke.
Apparently, Odom was so impressed with the therapeutic effect of medical marijuana that he has decided to launch his own line of weed-based products called Rich Soil Organics. With this, Odom joins the long list of celebrities like Mike Tyson, Wiz Khalifa, Tommy Chong, Snoop Dogg and Whoopi Goldberg, who are dabbling in the lucrative cannabis business.
Mixing weed and cocaine is dangerous
Evidently, there are certain strains of marijuana that are rich in cannabinoid (CBD), which promotes wellness by providing relief from anxiety, pain, inflammation and nausea. It is also believed that weed can help a person wean off from opioids. However, in the process, it is highly likely that the person gets addicted to it, which could be as overwhelming as an addiction to any other harmful substance requiring months of detoxification, rehabilitation and therapy. In addition, combining cocaine and marijuana can be highly detrimental to the user, as both the drugs impact different regions of the brain – one is a stimulant and the other a depressant.
In most instances, when users do cocaine and weed together, their purpose is to blunt the impact of coke. So while they do not experience the full intensity of cocaine rush, they are also more likely to ingest a higher dose to achieve optimum results. This can result in a fatal overdose. The emergency treatment for cocaine hyperthermia or elevated body temperature consists of administering sedation medications like Valium or Ativan in medical settings. Taking the two drugs together can spike the heart rate and blood pressure as well, putting strain on cardiovascular functioning and increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Recovery from cocaine addiction is possible
Cocaine is an intense, euphoria-producing stimulant that is used for recreational purposes. Available in powered form or as crystals, the drug can be smoked, snorted or swallowed. When it permeates the blood, it causes the brain cells to release dopamine responsible for the ensuing high one experiences. Apart from impacting the brain cells, cocaine is extremely damaging to the body’s tissues as well. It causes them to shrink and die over a period of time. People who snort cocaine are more likely to develop tumors and lesions in their mouths which require surgical intervention. In addition, people who regularly take cocaine are extremely malnourished due to poor diet. Therefore, a good rehabilitation program focuses on replenishing the nutrients apart from providing behavioral therapies.
