Consuming MDMA wrapped in cheese is an emerging trend among partygoers
Posted in Drug

Ecstasy, chemically known as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), is a drug common among partygoers across the world. The mood-altering effects of the drug make it popular choice of drug among people who wish to open up emotionally, which they might otherwise find it difficult. In a new emerging trend, now, middle-class women in the United Kingdom are taking MDMA wrapped in cheese to shed inhibitions and open up with friends at parties.

“I have a strong circle of female friends… We did not seem to have as much of a laugh than as when we were younger, there always seemed to be barriers up between us. So, one of our group members suggested we all take MDMA together so we could open up to each other and improve our friendships,” said a woman, describing the inspiration to use ecstasy.

MDMA use was common in rave parties in the 50s. The inclination to spice up the atmosphere in parties led to an increase in the consumption of the drug. The drug’s popularity among people of all age groups has risen due to its stimulating and hallucinogenic effects. In fact, users report about experiencing euphoric feelings, empathy, and increased energy levels.

MDMA use in US

According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), in 2016, an estimated 1.4 million people aged 12 or older were current users of hallucinogens like ecstasy, lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and psilocybin mushrooms. Though not subjected to clinical trials till date owing to lack of necessary approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), experts say that overdose of the drug can have certain damaging effects. Some of them are:

  • Nauseous feelings
  • Cramping of muscles
  • Blurred vision
  • Rapid heartbeat rate
  • High blood pressure
  • Panic attacks
  • Increased tendency to lose consciousness.

The risk of negative health outcomes associated with MDMA or “molly” use increases when most drug peddlers sell the drug in an adulterated or impure version. Research has highlighted how some people unknowingly consume psychoactive substances created to look like MDMA, and produce effects similar to the drug. Stimulants like amphetamine, cocaine or methamphetamine are mixed with the drug in varying proportions. While some drugs sold as molly contain MDMA mixed with various kinds of adulterants, there may be others with no MDMA at all. That’s why experts warn against the use of MDMA or molly.

The continuous changing structure of synthetic drugs makes its use more dangerous. The past decade has seen thousands of deaths owing to the use of unknown compounds sold under the trade name molly, which is available in capsule or powder form in the illegal drug market.

Timely treatment is key to sobriety

While researches are being carried out to understand the potential effects of MDMA, regular use of the drug in parties or other events can trigger dependence behavior. In addition, the use of illegal substances under the guise of MDMA not only raises the risk of addiction, but may also result in death. The only way to get rid of MDMA addiction is to seek timely treatment from a professional rehab center.
